Performance Experience

When creating this solo, Jaden did a lot of research into drug addiction, focusing on how it manipulates the mind. The 2 main stages of this solo start with first exploring the feeling of joy and adrenaline, initiating the act of taking prohibited substances and the first effects of exhilaration and glee. It then transitions into the negative side-effects of drugs, encapsulated by the erratic movement and falling into an unconscious state in the end.

Jaden was selected to perform at Top Class 2022 which is a high honour for all VCE and VET students in Australia. All 4 of his solos were in the top 50 of solos of each category. Jaden was asked to perform his choreographic piece called Addiction. This solo encapsulates the theme of drug addiction, focusing on the feeling of euphoria and the act of ‘getting high’. It then transitions into the downsides of an addiction and how the person goes into an unconscious state of mind, not knowing the difference between reality and fantasy

Ocean (an arrangement) was performed as part of the 3rd year VCA dancer’s assessment. The first piece was based on the archival Cunningham Trust piece called Ocean created by Merce Cunningham and John Cage. We were tutored by Melissa Toogood and were taught 60 out of 120 Cunningham phrases that were performed in the piece.

The second piece was created by the 3rd year students and was loosely based on and inspired by the Ocean repertoire. This piece was created in 3 weeks and there were many working parts such as music, lighting, choreography and many more to make thus work possible. The class utilised the chance method and choreographical tools on order to create this piece.
